Ben Afflek got it right...well...at least when you consider the color of the diamond
he purchased for his then fiancé, Jennifer Lopez.
You've been looking high and low for the perfect stone for that special someone. You've
come to realize that the classic beauty of the traditional colorless diamonds, while very
captivating, is not enough to express your feelings. You desire something more creative,
something more unique. Enter the realm of the colored diamonds. Pink diamonds to be exact!
Colored diamonds, also referred to as fancy cut diamonds, are far less common than colorless
diamonds. Because of this, colored diamonds are much more expensive than their traditional
counterparts. And one of the most expensive and rare of them all is the pink diamond. They
are so rare that you usually can't just go down to your neighborhood jeweler and pick one up.
Many jewelers will never have a natural pink diamond available.
The brilliance and pink sparkles are an unexpected and welcome change from the clear diamond rings
we see every day. But there is still the question of
how to pick the best diamond. Selecting a
colored diamond is slightly different than picking a colorless stone. Colored diamonds are graded
by their hue (or basic color) and intensity of color (basically how much color is present in the
diamond), as opposed to their lack of color. For more information on diamond quality see the
four Cs of Diamonds.
As with all diamonds, cut is extremely important in pink and other colored stones. Inclusions seem to
matter less while most attention is paid to the intensity of color.
Now, Jennifer Lopez may have been presented with a stunningly beautiful (and huge!) pink diamond ring
by Ben Affleck, but we are not all so lucky (ignoring for a minute that the wedding never took place)
to be dating movie stars with gigantic bank accounts. So, what is the average woman to do if she has
her heart set on a pink diamond engagement ring but her budget just does not allow for it? She may
want to consider a pink sapphire engagement ring or a ring that showcases both pink diamonds and pink
sapphires.
Pink sapphires are very pretty and durable gemstones with a much more managable price tag than pink
diamonds. Some may even choose to set a ring with a small pink diamond surrounded by pink sapphires
to attain the same pink hue effect.
There is no doubt that receiving a gorgeous pink diamond engagement ring will make any woman feel the
love it is intended to represent. She will surely cherish it as the most stunning piece of jewelry she has
ever seen.
